Chinese-Canadian Ode in Heroic Couplets

Composed by Mr. Yuk-Man Lai
Calligraphy by Mr. Yim Tse
Translated by Dr. Jan W. Walls

(Painful Departure from Family and Homeland)

Circumstances forced them to bid family goodbye,
Longing for home day and night could make grown men cry.

(Long Voyage over Rolling Seas)

For thousands of miles they braved the rolling, churning deep,
Sailing on the edge of death, they found it hard to sleep.

(Gruelling Labour to Build the Railway)

They carved through mountains, splitting stone to lay the railroad track,
With human strength they tamed nature, never looking back.

(Heroic Volunteers in Canadian Military)

They volunteered to take up arms, in battle they were bold
They won the rights of citizens when their brave tales were told.

(Answering the Call to Public Service)

In every job and every trade, they've worked ad studied more,
And still they serve society, like those who came before.

(The Overseas Chinese Way: Adopt, Adapt, Improve)

Greatness comes from breadth of mind, working hand-in-hand
For a multicultural heritage in service to our land.
